The Journey of Pranab Bardhan

Pranab Bardhan, now 65 years old, initially got encouragement to play Bridge from his father. He started his career in 1975 through auction bridge. He shifted to Contract Bridge in 1998 under the guidance of Debasish Guha and started his professional career in 2000.

Besides winning several state and national level trophies, he has acquired several international medals. Despite offers from many corporate houses to join, Bardhan has not accepted and he has maintained his career as a professional player.

The Frustration with the State Association

Bardhan is extremely frustrated with West Bengal Bridge Association (WBBA). Due to negligence from the association’s present ruling body, Bardhan has decided not to take part in any WBBA-organized competition. As a professional player, he now earns Rs 5 lakhs approximately in a year.

He said,

“I won a gold medal and the 2018 Asian Games. I have also brought gold to the country from Jakarta representing the Asia Cup gold in 2022. I have been felicitated and honored by several state associations across the country. Even, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated me personally for winning the Asian Games gold. Still, I have not received recognition from my state. I have decided to boycott WBBA-organized tournaments. The existing ruling body is a farce. They have no developmental program for the Bridge and that is the reason I do not see any future of the game in Bengal.”
