On a busy Friday in the 2023 Global Chess League, which featured four games, Magnus Carlsen defeated his two-time World Chess Championship rival Viswanathan Anand and held Ian Nepomniachtchi, the player he defeated to win the world championship in 2021 in the same city, to a draw.

Anand’s Ganges Grandmasters are in first place in the rankings with 21 game points and six match points following the hectic day of maneuvering.

Carlsen beat Anand in the opening game of the evening, which became its centerpiece. With six points right now, the Ganges Grandmasters are three points in front of the competition.

Anand said

“I was very careless. I was not fully together… There’s a special touch (when I play against Carlsen), but when you play as often as we have against each other it’s hard to make every single one special.”

Carlsen stated as both his and his Indian opponent’s eyes kept darting to the enormous TV set to the side to check the other game scores,

“I enjoy playing Vishy. But to be really honest, I’m more worried about what’s going on in the game.”

Despite Anand losing, his team, the Ganges Grandmasters, defeated the SG Alpine Warriors overall by a score of 11–6.

Carlsen previously found himself competing against Nepomniachtchi. The Russian made something of a comeback after losing a see-saw world championship match to Ding Liren earlier this year.

Nepo stated,

“I should say something like it was very good to be back on the board. But, in fact, I’m not sure. I didn’t play any chess for about a month. So for me it was a bit of a new feeling playing over-the-board chess again.”

The 2023 Global Chess League will feature four games on Sunday, with the Triveni Continental Kings and Balan Alaskan Knights each playing two games.
