German Open: Sathish Karunakaran and Aakarshi Kashyap’s Thrilling Journey to Round of 16!

Indian badminton players Sathish Kumar Karunakaran and Aakarshi Kashyap advanced to the second round of the German Open Super 300 tournament, while S Sankar Muthuswamy was eliminated on Wednesday. Currently holding the 50th position in the world rankings, Sathish secured a victory over the 45th-ranked Misha Zilberman in a thrilling match, earning him a spot in the pre-quarterfinals.

Sathish, who claimed his first Super 100 title at the Odisha Open last year, triumphed with a score of 21-18, 19-21, 21-19, setting up a pre-quarterfinal showdown with Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen. Despite winning the men’s singles match, Sathish and his partner Aadya Variyath faced defeat in the mixed doubles against the third-seeded pair from Hong Kong, Tang Chun Man and Tsu Ying Suet.

In the women’s singles category, Aakarshi Kashyap overcame Ukraine’s Polina Buhrove, securing a spot in the round of 16. Aakarshi, fresh from her victory at the Uganda International challenge the previous Sunday, staged a comeback to defeat Polina in a one-hour battle, with a scoreline of 21-23, 21-17, 21-11. The 43rd-ranked Indian player is now set to face Denmark’s sixth-seeded Mia Blichfeldt in the upcoming round.
