Gautam Gambhir‘s recent incident at the Premadasa Stadium, where he displayed his frustration by raising his middle finger towards fans, has ignited a significant online controversy. The ex-cricketer was involved in the Asia Cup 2023 commentary team during the India vs. Nepal group stage match this Monday. As he left the commentary booth, fans began chanting the names of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni, as seen in the viral video circulating on social media. However, what upset the fans the most was Gambhir’s action, which occurred while he was being escorted by an official.

The spectators believed that the vocal support for Dhoni and Kohli agitated the ex-cricketer- Gautam Gambhir, who then expressed his frustration with an offensive gesture. However, shortly thereafter, Gambhir took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide an explanation and clarification.
“A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes”.
Not everything is as it seems. Any Indian would react how I did to the kind of slogans used against our nation. I love our players & I love my country. 🇮🇳🇮🇳

Gambhir also addressed the media and elucidated the reasons behind his contentious action during a live cricket match involving the Indian cricket team.
“What is shown on social media has no truth in it because people show whatever they want to show. The truth about the video that went viral is that if you raise anti-India slogans and speak about Kashmir then the person before you will obviously react and not smile and leave. There were 2-3 Pakistanis there who were speaking anti-India things and things on Kashmir. So, it was my natural reaction. I can’t hear anything against my country. So, that was my reaction.”
