Sable, a national champion in the 3000m steeplechase, broke the Olympic qualifying time of 8:15.00 to become the very first Indian track athlete (apart from road events) to secure a spot for the 2024 Games. Avinash Sable also improved on his 8:17.18 from the Rabat Diamond League that he secured in May to record his season-best time.

Avinash’s qualifying came after Murali Sreeshankar qualified for the 2024 Olympics with a leap of 8.37 meters at the Asian Athletics Championships in 2023.

Sable started in a competitive field that included Soufiane El Bakkali and Abraham Kibiwot, racing in 11th place and running behind the leading pack for the first 1000 meters.

The Indian runner gained up speed in the final 1000 meters and surged up to fifth position. Sable failed to clear the final obstacle and came up painfully short of his personal best time of 8:11.20, placing sixth. This 6th-place finish means that Avinash Sable has moved up in the rankings for qualification for the Diamond League Finale in Eugene, USA.

Opting to skip the Asian Athletics Championships 2023 in favor of intense training at Colorado Springs, Avinash has set his sights on the World Championships. Demonstrating remarkable dedication, the Indian athlete achieved his season’s best performance, showcasing promising signs of success ahead.
