Freestyle Chess GOAT Challenge: Gukesh Takes Down Chess Legend Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren

Recovering impressively from an initial defeat against Iranian French Grand Master Alireza Firouzja in the first round, India’s Dommaraju Gukesh achieved a notable victory against World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen in the second round of the Weissenhaus Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T Challenge held in Hamburg, Germany. The 17-year-old player from Chennai also secured wins against the reigning world champion, Ding Liren of China, and Levon Aronian of the USA, concluding a remarkable day.

Gukesh is currently in a joint second position, sharing the spot with Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Abdusattorov, each accumulating three points out of a potential four. Vincent Keymar, a local participant, leads the competition with 3.5 points in four rounds, while Carlsen holds the fifth position in the field of eight players.

The 2024 Freestyle Chess G.O.A.T. Challenge is an in-person Chess960 tournament created by Jan Henric Buettner, a 59-year-old entrepreneur and chess enthusiast from Hamburg. The event showcases eight of the world’s top players, personally selected by Carlsen.
