After a turbulent year for an under-performing Chennaiyin FC, it will be a much-needed change for the 2-time champions. Former manager, John Gregory will be remembered by the players and fans as the man who got Chennaiyin FC their 2nd league title.

A fresh start for the Machans

Chennaiyin FC started the 2019-2020 ISL season where they left off the last year. Unable to score goals and a win-less streak continued to haunt them, until that sensational win against Hyderabad FC in late November.

They scored their first goal in 7 ISL games in the 92nd minute, only for Hyderabad FC to score an equalizer in the 95th minute. The 2-time champions gave it all they had and secured the 96th-minute winner.

Following that win, Chennaiyin FC played a 2-2 draw against Odisha FC. The game saw Chennaiyin FC give away the lead, twice.

John Gregory and the club management had a mutual agreement to part ways on Saturday, 30th November. There were no hard feelings between the two parties as it was going to be a much-needed change in tactics for the 2-time Champions.

On Tuesday night, Chennaiyin FC announced the arrival of Owen Coyle, who brings in years of experience having managed teams in the UK and US. His first managerial stint was at the Scottish club Falkirk.

He then took up the job at Burnley FC for 3 years, ending in 2010. He managed the Clarets for 116 games, winning 49 games, drawing 29 and losing 38. Owen then took up the job at Bolton Wanderers, where he managed them for 126 games, winning 42, drawing 24 and losing 60 games.

Owen Coyle then managed Wigan Athletic, Houston Dynamo, Blackburn Rovers and Ross County before taking up the job at Chennaiyin FC. The Irish manager prefers a narrow 4-4-2 formation with a few variations.

His first game in charge will be when Chennaiyin FC take on Jamshedpur FC on 9th December. The 2-time champions are 9th in the league with 5 points.
