The India Open Boxing Championship will be organised under BFI.

India’s very first boxing league will feature more than 25 countries and will be organized under Boxing Federation of India. The major attraction is the participation of world class boxers from various countries that we only see on our Television sets.

Ajay Singh, President, BFI said, “India Open is happening for the first time and it will see participation from more than 25 countries. All the boxing nations of the world are going to be in this championship.”

Boxing powerhouse nations like Cuba, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia, have given the green signal to their boxers for participation.

The prize of the championship is a whopping $100,000. Fans in India can enjoy watching it live from January 28 at Thyagaraj Stadium in New Delhi.

“India will field four teams in this championship. So, a lot of our boxers will get international experience,” added the BFI president.

Divulging details about the conception of Indian Open Boxing Championship, Singh said, “We believe that it is important that India host championships of international calibre every year. It gives a great experience to our boxers, officials and organisers. India must build its organisational ability as well as bring up the sport in the country. We are trying our level best to have tournaments of international level that will happen every year.”

The President further added. “India hosted world championship for youth women extremely well. We also won five gold and two bronze medals. This is a record as India has never performed so well in a world championship. This year also, India will also be hosting the elite senior women championship in New Delhi.”

The tournament shall be a good warm up for Indian boxers participating at the Commonwealth and Asian games.

The BFI President was confident that India will put up a good show in the CWG, Asian Games, and in the world championships that are going to happen this year.

Indian Open Boxing Championship – Next up is World Series

World Series Boxing will start from 23rd of March, 2018.

Putting light on other high profile boxing tournaments the President of BFI said, “India will also participate in the World Series Boxing after several years. The matches will be held in India starting from 23rd of March. A lot of action in boxing is to happen throughout the 2018. And, there is no question that with the kind of preparations, match practice and the priority to the players; the performance is going to be good as it has been over the last one year.”

When asked whether politics was hampering sports, the BFI President said the sports federations should focus on sports and not on politics.

“Focus needs to be solely on the sportspersons. There are many federations that are focusing on the sport and the results are there for everyone to see. Today we have five or six sports that are doing well and are improving every day; but there are some that need more work and boxing is one of them,” concluded Ajay Singh.

As a promoter of sports and athletes in general, we hope that federations enhance their focus towards nurturing young talents. With ‘Khelo India’ initiative also on the right track, the day is not far for our sportspersons to make it big on the world stage.
