The India women’s hockey team must put behind the disappointing night they experienced in Ranchi last month as they embark on a fresh start in the upcoming 2023-24 season of the FIH Hockey Pro League. Having missed qualification for the 2024 Paris Olympics, the women’s team is set to kick off their FIH Pro League campaign against China at Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneshwar.

Throughout the Pro League, India will engage in a total of eight matches against various opponents in two legs held in Bhubaneshwar and Rourkela. A significant challenge for the Indian team, contributing to their underwhelming performance in the Olympic qualifiers, is the absence of proficient drag flickers to capitalize on penalty corners. Janneke Schopman has emphasized the necessity for a more robust talent development program in the country to groom skilled drag flickers.

Gurjit Kaur has rejoined the team, while the young player Deepika aims to fill the void left by the retired experienced defender, Deep Grace Ekka, in the drag-flicker position.

The upcoming matches pose a significant challenge for the Indian team, as they are set to compete against formidable opponents such as China, the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia. Notably, all these nations have previously defeated India, with the United States emerging victorious in the recent Olympic qualifiers.

The Indian team’s opening match will be against the reigning Asian Games Champions, China, followed by a clash with the Netherlands on Sunday. Subsequently, they will go up against Australia on February 7, concluding their fixtures in Bhubaneswar with a match against the United States on February 9.
