The current Asian champions, India, have been placed in Pool B for the upcoming FIH Men’s Hockey5s World Cup, which is scheduled to take place from January 24 to 31 in Muscat. This inaugural edition of the tournament features a total of sixteen national teams, organized into four groups, each consisting of four teams. India’s Pool B opponents include Egypt, Switzerland, and Jamaica.
India secured their spot in the tournament by defeating Pakistan 4-4 (with a 2-0 shootout victory) during the first Men’s Hockey5s Asia Cup held in Salalah, Oman, on a Saturday. The Netherlands find themselves grouped with Pakistan, Poland, and Nigeria in Pool A. Pool C includes Australia, New Zealand, Trinidad & Tobago, and Kenya, while the host nation, Oman, is set to compete against Malaysia, the United States, and Fiji in Pool D.
Mandeep Mor, the captain of the Indian team, expressed in a statement released by Hockey India:
”There are some really strong teams… Everyone will enter the tournament with the hopes of becoming the first-ever World Champions and we want to do that as well.”
Hockey 5s is a super-fast, highly skillful, shorter spectator-friendly format of the sport where each team plays with five players each.
