The Highest & Lowest FIFA WC Goals Scored
At the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup, there were a total of 171 goals scored. The goal-fest in 2014 was made possible by a few games with extremely high scoring totals, including the Netherlands’ 5-1 victory over Spain in the group stages and, most notably, Germany’s 7-1 victory and humiliation of Brazil in the semi-finals. With 121 players, the 2014 World Cup in Brazil set a record for the most different scorers in a single competition.
At the first two World Cups in 1930 and 1934, both tournaments only reached 70 goals. These two years hold the record for the least goals scored in all editions of the World Cup. However, this is explained by the fact that fewer games were played overall. Only 13 and 16 teams in the 1930 and 1934 WC, competed respectively.-- Advertisement --
FIFA Goals-per-game Ratio
The 1954 World Cup in Switzerland saw the highest goals-per-game ratio of all time, with an average of 5.38 goals being scored in each of the 26 games. On the other end of the spectrum, the Italy 1990 World Cup had the lowest average goal total per game with 115 goals scored in 52 matches, or 2.21 goals per game.
Highest Goals Scorer of the Tournament
Miroslav Klose scored the maximum number of goals in the tournament. The German forward has scored a total of 16 goals in the 24 matches that he played. Christiano Ronaldo has the chance to break Klose’s record and be the top all-time scorer in World Cups if he manages to score nine goals in the competition.
The FIFA World Cup of 2022 has started on a pleasant note. It seems the 2022 global tournament will witness numerous goals. Spain thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening match. The high-scoring trend might continue in the upcoming matches of this World Cup.
