Introduction

Shreya Gupta from Jammu & Kashmir plays fencing and has chosen Saber Group which is the fastest one among the three categories of fencing. Shreya is just 18 years old but she already has achieved the best sports award of Kashmir, ‘Sher-e-Kashmir’ after having acquired three international bronze medals (Asian Championship and two Commonwealth Championships), 16 gold medals, four silver medals, and eight bronze medals so far in the national level.

The Beginning

Fighting was always Shreya’s favorite topic. She revealed,

“I did not have a sister. Rather I have one brother. I played with him in childhood, watching different fighting cartoons.”

The childhood fascination might have transpired into Shreya’s mind and that could be the reason she started Taekwondo while her brother Shivalik started fencing. Shreya Gupta had medals also in the national level competitions in taekwondo. Still, she was highly inspired by the gears and dresses and decided to shift from taekwondo to fencing. That was in 2013.

Idols of Shreya Gupta

Shreya’s idol fencer is Hungary’s Aron Szilagyi and she had the opportunity to get his wishes during an exposure trip to Hungary. She revealed,

“Aron gave me some valuable pieces of advice asking me not to bother about the losses, but rather to analyze the defeats and always become positive before the upcoming matches.”

Shreya at the same time mentioned Bhavani Devi‘s name adding,

“Bhavani Devi is a torch bearer in Indian fencing. She has been the first Indian fencer to have participated in the Tokyo Olympics. So, all of the other Indian fencers including the male are following her. I have a very good relationship and before my exposure tour to Hungary, she cautioned me about the difficulties that I might have to face abroad. It helped me as initially in the first few days in Hungary I was alone and had a few difficulties.”

Shreya Gupta’s Immediate Target

Shreya is now preparing for the senior national championship. She said,

“The national championship is going to be very crucial. If I can place myself within the top four then only I will be eligible to take part in the Asian Games this year.”

Shreya has been included in the Target Olympics Podium (TOP) in January this year and she is presently training at Sanskar Dham Sports Academy in Ahmedabad. Then she has World Championship this year before the Games.

The Dream

Shreya has the ultimate dream of winning a medal in the Olympics like all other aspiring sports personalities. But more than that, Shreya revealed,

“I want to place my name in the bracket of India’s premier sports personalities in the future. I want to be named by the common people through my achievements in the future.”
