Usain Bolt, the Jamaican Sprinter is hailed as the greatest and fastest runner in the world. He has set countless records in the field of running; he even holds the World Record in the 100 meters dash. At the 2009 World Championships, Bolt clocked an amazing 9.8 seconds in the 100 meters race to set the World Record. In the same circuit, Indian racers have also competed and proved their mettle. Though they are yet to break under the 10 second figure in these races, they have shown their potential and abilities numerous times in various sporting events held throughout.

Starting off, we have the latest addition to the roster of the fastest Indian roster, Amlan Borgohain. The 24 year old burst into the scene after delivering quite an impressive performance. And to his credit, he is the fastest Indian sprinter to date, having both the men’s 100m and 200m national records under his belt. Hailing from Assam, Amlan’s first love was football, which he followed whole heartedly. He even represented his school in various competitions. But recurring injuries put his football career on standby. It was then when he decided to make his transition from football to athletics. Encouraged and supported by his family members, the 6’4’’ frame and his natural pace made sprinting the natural choice for him. And there onwards, there was no looking back. He continued to improve and excel in his performance. In the All India Inter Railways Athletics Championship held on 29th August, 2022, Amalan broke the national 100m record. He clocked in at 10.25 seconds, bettering the previous record held by Amiya Kumar Mallick. Undoubtedly one of the fastest runners in India, Amlan’s previous best was 10.34 seconds. Furthermore, he also holds the 200m national record of 20.52 seconds (which he recorded at the Federation Cup).

Next up in the list of fastest Indian Runners, we have Amiya Kumar Mallick. Prior to Amlan, Mallick held the national record in 100m at 10.26 seconds. He had clocked this in April, 2016, at the semifinals of Federation Cup. Furthermore, he also has numerous accolades to his name. He had won a silver medal in the 100 meters event at the Commonwealth Youth Games held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has often credited his success to his coach and trainer, the renowned Glen Mils.
Gurindervir Singh also makes it into the list of fastest Indian runners. He has to his name, the U-20 National Record. He clocked in 10.47 seconds at the 100 meter event to better the previous record held by Augustine Yeshudas of Kerala (10.57 seconds). The young lad from the state of Punjab has shown tremendous growth and potential. He was touted to be the next big thing in the racing circuit. Gurindervir, in 2021, was almost on the verge of breaking the 100 meter National Record. He had managed to win the 60th National Inter State Athletics Competition after clocking 10.27 seconds; missing the target by a margin of 0.02 seconds. Irrespective of that, he has a bright future ahead and big things to conquer. The 22 year old runner has been the national champion on two occasions. Furthermore, he also has an Under 20 Championships bronze medal to his name. Still in the early phases of his career, he will definitely make a name for himself in the future.
Rachita Mistry is another prominent feature in the list of the fastest Indian runners. She held the national record time in women’s 100 meter event for a total of 13 years, a stupendous feat in itself. Rachita recorded the time of 11.38 seconds at the 2000 National Circuit Meet which was held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Soon after, she bettered this record in Bangalore wherein she clocked in 11.26 seconds. However, since dope tests were not carried out for this meet, the results from the event were not considered; hence her time did not make it to the national records.
Irrespective of that, because of her contributions to the field of running and her illustrious career, she was awarded the Arjuna Award by the government of India.
The name Dutee Chand needs no introduction. For the longest time, she dominated in the female running circuit. She is the first Indian to win gold at a global 100-meter racing event. Similarly, she also has numerous feats and accolades to her name. The reigning women’s 100m event, she clocked in at an impressive 11.17 seconds recorded at the Indian Grand Prix. Nicknamed The Dhing Express (Dhing being the place she hails from, in Assam), Hima Das is also one of the fastest Indian Runners. The current holder of the Indian national record in 400 meters event, she clocked in 50.79 seconds at the 2018 Asian Games held at Jakarta, Indonesia. She has also won in other events such as 200 meters, 400 meters, and 4X400 meters held in different countries. Because of her incredible performance, she was appointed as a Deputy Superintendent of Assam Police.
