Starting off, we have the latest addition to the roster of the fastest Indian roster, Amlan Borgohain. The 24 year old burst into the scene after delivering quite an impressive performance. And to his credit, he is the fastest Indian sprinter to date, having both the men’s 100m and 200m national records under his belt. Hailing from Assam, Amlan’s first love was football, which he followed whole heartedly. He even represented his school in various competitions. But recurring injuries put his football career on standby. It was then when he decided to make his transition from football to athletics. Encouraged and supported by his family members, the 6’4’’ frame and his natural pace made sprinting the natural choice for him. And there onwards, there was no looking back. He continued to improve and excel in his performance. In the All India Inter Railways Athletics Championship held on 29th August, 2022, Amalan broke the national 100m record. He clocked in at 10.25 seconds, bettering the previous record held by Amiya Kumar Mallick. Undoubtedly one of the fastest runners in India, Amlan’s previous best was 10.34 seconds. Furthermore, he also holds the 200m national record of 20.52 seconds (which he recorded at the Federation Cup).

The young lad from the state of Punjab has shown tremendous growth and potential. He was touted to be the next big thing in the racing circuit. Gurindervir, in 2021, was almost on the verge of breaking the 100 meter National Record. He had managed to win the 60th National Inter State Athletics Competition after clocking 10.27 seconds; missing the target by a margin of 0.02 seconds. Irrespective of that, he has a bright future ahead and big things to conquer. The 22 year old runner has been the national champion on two occasions. Furthermore, he also has an Under 20 Championships bronze medal to his name. Still in the early phases of his career, he will definitely make a name for himself in the future.

Rachita Mistry is another prominent feature in the list of the fastest Indian runners. She held the national record time in women’s 100 meter event for a total of 13 years, a stupendous feat in itself. Rachita recorded the time of 11.38 seconds at the 2000 National Circuit Meet which was held in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Soon after, she bettered this record in Bangalore wherein she clocked in 11.26 seconds. However, since dope tests were not carried out for this meet, the results from the event were not considered; hence her time did not make it to the national records.

Irrespective of that, because of her contributions to the field of running and her illustrious career, she was awarded the Arjuna Award by the government of India.
