The Haryana-born badminton player will be a major addition for the party in the thick of the Delhi poll campaign. The BJP has already lost as many as five states in the last year, and the move to bring Saina on board is clearly aimed at curbing that number to rise to six
This is not the first time that the BJP has roped famous sports personalities just before the assembly polls.
The party had brought wrestlers Sushil Kumar and Babita Phogat and former hockey team skipper Sandeep Singh on board just before the Haryana elections. The latter even went on to win the election and become a minister.
Nehwal is amongst the most popular sportspersons in the country with a significant fan following as well as brand value. A former World No.1, the 29-year-old has been bestowed upon with India’s top sporting awards like the Arjuna Award and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.
Nehwal has over 24 international titles to her name. She is also the first Indian shuttler to win an Olympic medal – a bronze – which she won in 2012 in London.
Saina, with her tweets praising PM Narendra Modi, has widely been likened to lean towards the BJP some time or the other.
In fact, she found herself in controversy after a tweet of hers was found to be alike to several others that praised PM Modi for a speech last year. Saina was also trolled on Twitter with screenshots of the identical tweets.
