Dutee Chand Unhappy After Winning Gold at Indian Grand Prix

The Indian Grand Prix V held in Patiala was a relatively off-colour event with some of the biggest names in Indian athletics giving it a miss. This was reflected in the fact that not a single athletes came close to the qualifying standards set for the upcoming World Championships in Doha (which starts from September 28).

Having seen a slew of stars go abroad to train for the Worlds, Dutee Chand made the most of the event with a gold medal in the 100m sprint. However, the 23-year-old sprinter, who missed the flight to Europe due to a passport issue, expressed her unhappiness for the lack of any competition in the event.

Dutee ran alongside only two runners – S Archana (11.53) of Tamil Nadu and Manvir Kaur (12.28) of Punjab.

“It was disappointing competition wise as my competitors had no pace to challenge me. I was earlier supposed to compete with European runners in Ireland and Germany this week where I would have faced runners clocking close to 11.00 seconds, so I trained accordingly, that’s why I came here so that I could at least see some competition,” the Odisha runner said in an interview with Mail Today.

“I could have done better if I got some heats to run in as it would have allowed my body to be better prepared for the final race, but as there was just three of us, heats were out of the question,” she further explained.

M Sree Shankar was one of the few athletes who performed well at the Indian Grand Prix. The national record holder achieved a personal best of the season with an 8 m long jump. However, the 20-year-old complained about the fact that his jumps came far too frequently as a result of just six athletes competing.

The situation was disappointing in other events, such as Women’s Shot Put, where Paramjot Kaur was the lone competent. She could manage only 14.36 as her best throw.

Elsewhere, Women’s discus throw witnessed only two participants, and the 400m saw another five runners in the fray.
