India’s vault queen Dipa Karmakar captured the imagination of millions of fans almost winning a medal in the finals of vault events in Gymnastics at the Rio Olympics in 2016, finishing fourth eventually.
One of those fans was Sachin Tendulkar. The Master Blaster remembered the moment when Dipa performed the now-famous ‘Produnova’ vault at the Rio Olympics finals.
“Only so far 7 athletes have attempted the Produnova. Only 5 have succeeded. I can proudly say one of them is sitting among us,” said Tendulkar. He was speaking on the eve of the launch of a book based on her life ‘Dipa Karmakar – The Small Wonder’.

Tendulkar further added that although Karmakar didn’t finish with a medal, she inspired many with her brave performance.
“Dipa not only left an impression,” he said, “but also motivated thousands of youngsters to go out & do something special for our country & that’s what matters.”
The Small Wonder: Dipa’s intriguing journey
The book in question is co-authored by Dipa’s coach Bishweshwar Nandi along with sports journalists Digvijay Singh Deo and Vimal Mohan. It is being released by FingerPrint Publishing.

The book goes through Karmakar’s intriguing journey that began from the day she started her training at the fabled single-storey sporting club – Vivekananda Byamagar, Agartala – and culminated with her becoming the first Indian gymnast to ever qualify for the final round of Olympics.
Sachin Tendulkar had famously gifted Dipa and other Indian Olympians with a BMW after their Rio antiques. More importantly, he revealed how he had advised her not to let the new found fame affect her during the meeting.

Furthermore, the Master Blaster also shared how recovering from injuries affects an athlete.
Dipa has been struggling with a knee injury for some time now. The same forced her to pull out of the artistic team finals in 2018 Asian Games back in August this year.
Tendulkar also expressed hope that Dipa fully recovers and achieves new feats in the future.
Speaking about Olympics, Sachin batted for the inclusion of Cricket in the global extravaganza.
He pointed out how there were different versions of the sport in the Olympics and that featuring Cricket in the quadrennial event will only make the sport more global.
