Cricket in Asian Games History | Winners Over The Years

Cricket will be competing for medals in the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023, marking the sport’s nine-year comeback to the continental showpiece. Cricket has only appeared in a small number of multi-sport events worldwide, despite being immensely popular in the Indian subcontinent. This Sport has only been played at the Olympics once, in Paris in 1900, and two times at the Commonwealth Games (CWG), in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, and in Birmingham in 2022.

Cricket debuted as a medal competition at the Asian Games in 2010 and was competed again at the 2014 edition. The games were not given international recognition. Here’s what happened during cricket’s two appearances in the Asian Games.

Cricket made its debut in the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in 2010. At that time, it was organized in the shortest format, Twenty20. Nine groups competed in the men’s competition, including Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan but India did not send a team.

Pakistan’s encounter with China in the men’s competition was one of the most significant games in the competition. Pakistan defeated China by 128 runs with a tournament-high total of 183/1. In conclusion, Pakistan’s Khalid Latif earned the most runs in the competition with an undefeated 103 that included five sixes. It continues to be the only century thus far in the Asian Games.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan advanced to the men’s final via the group stage and elimination rounds. Bangladesh won the competition and earned the nation’s debut gold medal at the Asian Games under the captaincy of Mohammad Ashraful. Pakistan, in the meantime, overcame Sri Lanka to take home the bronze. Pakistan’s cricket squad defeated Bangladesh to win the gold medal in the eight-team women’s competition, with Japan taking home the bronze.

At the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, cricket (T20 format) was one of the 36 medal sports. Ten groups were added to the men’s and women’s fields, respectively. India, however, made the decision to forgo the event once more. Similar to the prior edition, a venue for cricket was constructed for the occasion, and Yeonhui Cricket Ground served as the site for all cricket matches.

The best squad total in the Asian Games was achieved by Bangladesh versus Kuwait in this tournament, which set a record with 224/9. Bangladesh defeated Kuwait by a massive margin of 203 runs after dismissing them for just 21. That year, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan in the gold medal match to win the men’s competition. Champions from the previous season, Bangladesh were eliminated in the semi-finals. The Bangla Tigers took bronze after beating Hong Kong in the third-place game.

In the women’s competition, Pakistan comfortably defended their championship in a rain-soaked final. The women’s Pakistan cricket squad defeated Bangladesh in the gold medal play-off. This was determined by the Duckworth-Lewis method (a mechanism that sets target scores in rain-affected encounters to compel outcomes). Sri Lanka grabbed the last medal slot by defeating China for the bronze.

The women’s competition also included the Asian Games’ only five-wicket haul. China’s Xiang Ruan won 5/9 to disqualify South Korean ladies for 49. China dominated the match by an eight-wicket margin.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced that both the men’s and women’s Indian cricket teams will take part in the upcoming Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, the People’s Republic of China. This marks the first time India will be sending teams to compete in the Asian Games cricket competition. The tournament is scheduled to take place from September 23 to October 8 this year.
