In the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024), the 11th game unfolded a heated contest between the women’s teams of Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore on March 4. Despite Bangalore’s impressive performance, a significant incident occurred during the second innings. Renowned Sri Lankan cricketer Chamari Athapaththu found herself entangled in one of the most contentious Decision Review System (DRS) rulings of the WPL tournament. In the seventh over of the second innings, Athapaththu was struck on the pads, leading to a fervent appeal. Despite the loud protest, the umpire initially ruled not out.

Nevertheless, according to Bangalore’s review, the DRS presented a divergent scenario. The hawkeye’s representation was anticipated to illustrate the ball veering left, possibly avoiding the leg stump. Contrary to expectations, the delivery behaved like a googly, resulting in the dismissal of Chamari Athapaththu.

The footage of this incident circulated widely on X (formerly referred to as Twitter). Athapaththu expressed astonishment at the DRS outcome, while UP Warriorz captain Alyssa Healy disputed the decision with the official. Meanwhile, Bangalore players celebrated the wicket.

Discussing the women’s team of Royal Challengers Bangalore, there has been a significant improvement in their performance compared to the inaugural season of the WPL. Notably, under the leadership of Smriti Mandhana, the team has participated in five matches. They have secured victory in three and faced defeat in two matches. This currently places them in the third position in the standings.

In their recent match against UP Warriorz, they batted first, with Mandhana delivering an impressive 80-run innings, complemented by Ellyse Perry’s contribution of 58 runs. Consequently, Bangalore successfully posted a total of 198 runs in the first innings.
