There was a time that there were not more than 1 or 2 quality bowlers on the national side, but thanks to the IPL, Indian bench strength has gone up drastically. One of the latest finds in IPL is this 23-year-old left-arm pacer, Chetan Sakariya. India has not produced many quality left-arm pacers, but Sakariya is an exception. He bowls with accuracy and knows what he does best. Plus his skills while fielding is an added advantage.

Chetan Sakriya, born in a small village of Bhavnagar in Gujarat, comes from a not-so-well-to-do family but has always had support from his family in his cricketing career. He was financially supported by his maternal uncle to start his career. He was once gifted a pair of shoes by Sheldon Jackson, another domestic cricketer because he could not afford them.
Sakariya made his List A debut for Saurashtra on 22nd February 2018 in Vijay Hazare 2017-2018. He played in the Ranji Trophy season the same year on 20th November, picking up a 5 wicket haul in his first innings. He first played in Sayed Mushtaq Ali Trophy on 21st February 2019.
Chetan Sakariya IPL
Based on his performance in the domestic circuit, Sakariya was picked by Rajasthan Royals in the auction for the 2021 season. He made his debut against Punjab Kings and picked up 3 wickets in that match.
Sakariya International Career
Sakariya impressed everyone with his abilities in the IPL 2021, and when most of the Indian players were touring England, a secondary team was formed for a white ball series in Sri Lanka, and he was selected in the squad. He made his T20 and ODI debut in that series.
Kick-off to his career
After some decent performances in the domestic circuit, he was picked up in the IPL 2021 auction by Rajasthan Royals for 1.2 crores. Because of injuries to some senior bowlers, Sakariya made way into the playing XI and he debuted against Punjab Kings. He picked up 3 wickets in the match, including that of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal. Sakariya maintained his wicket-taking bowling for the remainder of the tournament. He was very reflexive in the field as well, which is an added advantage.
Being mostly self-taught, Sakariya has been impressive. In his first international series against Sri Lanka, he was not at the top of his game and did not pick too many wickets. But in his defense, the wicket was not ideal for any fast bowlers.
His left-arm bowling gives him a different angle, which is not very common to see in India. The team can use that to their advantage in the future. He will also be an important part of Rajasthan Royals in the second phase of IPL 2021, which is scheduled to begin in the second half of September.
