Indian badminton player Lakshya Sen secured victory at the Canada Open 2023, defeating China’s Li Shi Feng in the final on Sunday at Calgary. The Indian athlete, who won the Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, outperformed the All England champion with a score of 21-18, 22-20.

Lakshya had previously faced Li Shi Feng six times, holding a 4-2 head-to-head record, including a recent victory at the Thailand Open. In the earlier rounds of the tournament, Lakshya faced tough challenges. He had to dig deep to stun the second-seeded Kunlavut Vitidsarn from Thailand, securing a 21-18, 21-15 win in the first round.

In the second round, he defeated Brazil’s Ygor Coelho de Oliveira with a score of 21-15, 21-11. The third round proved to be a demanding match against German player Julien Carraggi, but Lakshya eventually prevailed with a 21-8, 17-21, 21-10 victory. In the semi-final, he vanquished Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto with a score of 21-17, 21-14.

The 2023 Canada Open victory marked Lakshya’s first final appearance of the year since the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in August 2022. It was also his second time reaching the final of a BWF World Tour Super 500 event. Despite experiencing multiple first-round exits this year, causing him to drop out of the top-10 rankings, the 21-year-old showcased his skills and determination in this tournament. His best performance this year was at the Indonesia Masters in January, where he reached the quarter-finals.

Lakshya has been striving to regain his form after undergoing a nose surgery for a deviated septum following the World Championships last August. Subsequently, he faced frequent illnesses and allergies for over eight months.
