The Badminton World Federation has revealed the venue for the 2023 BWF World Tour Finals, marking the conclusion of the season. The finals are scheduled to occur in Hangzhou, China, from December 13th to 17th.
This event will be hosted by Hangzhou, which is also the venue for the upcoming 19th Asian Games commencing on September 23rd. Notably, the esteemed World Tour Finals will be held in Hangzhou until 2026 and will present participants with an impressive prize pool of $2,000,000, the highest in its category.
BWF secretary general Thomas Lund said,
“It is with great excitement to confirm Hangzhou, China as the host of our flagship HSBC BWF World Tour Finals for this cycle.” “Badminton is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world with all-time high participation and fan numbers and Hangzhou with its superb sporting infrastructure and experience in staging elite international events is an ideal host for our finals,”
The BWF World Tour finals are an exclusive event featuring the highest-ranked eight players and pairs in each category, competing fiercely for the ultimate championship. In the previous edition, Viktor Axelsen and Akanae Yamaguchi emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s singles divisions.
Meanwhile, in the men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles categories of the World Tour Finals 2022, titles were secured by Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi, Chen Qing Chen and Jia Yi Fan, as well as Zheng Si Wei and Huang Ya Qiong.
Within the realm of Indian athletes, PV Sindhu stands as the sole badminton player to secure victory at the BWF World Tour Finals in 2018, a triumph achieved by overcoming Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the final match.
In the most recent period, BWF has introduced an updated schedule for the World Tour, comprising 31 events. This revised calendar includes a heightened number of Super 1000, Super 750, and Super 500 tournaments, consequently presenting enhanced prospects for players to compete for greater prize funds.
