BWF World Championships 2023: Prannoy, Lakshya Power Onward; Reddy-Kapoor’s Journey Ends

Indian senior badminton player HS Prannoy began his journey in the BWF World Championships 2023 by securing a victory in the tournament’s initial round on Monday. Prannoy, aged 31, triumphed over Finland’s Kalle Koljonen in a two-set match, claiming a 24-22, 21-10 victory and securing his advancement to the next round. Another Indian player, Lakshya Sen, also achieved progress at the Denmark event, achieving a commanding 21-10, 21-7 win against Mauritius’ shuttler Georges Julien Paul.

The inaugural match proved to be a closely fought battle, with both players engaging in a back-and-forth exchange, motivating each other to surpass the standard 21-point limit. In the early phase, the Finnish player swiftly gained a 4-point advantage at 8-4.

Yet, Prannoy mounted a comeback, securing 7 consecutive points to shift the momentum in his favor at 11-8. Nevertheless, Koljonen displayed resilience, regaining the lead in a series of exchanges before the match extended beyond the predetermined point threshold.

Prannoy remained composed under pressure to secure a 24-22 victory against Koljonen in the inaugural game, allowing him to gain a 1-0 advantage in the match. In contrast, the second game proved to be a much simpler task for Prannoy as he dominated his opponent. Seizing an early lead of four points at 6-2, the Indian player maintained his control throughout the match.

Employing powerful smashes, he clinched a decisive 21-10 triumph over the Finnish contender. This commanding performance resulted in a 2-0 triumph for Prannoy in the opening round.

The Indian mixed doubles duo comprising of Sikki Reddy and Rohan Kapoor faced an early elimination in the initial round of the competition. They suffered a defeat with a scoreline of 21-14, 20-22, 21-18 against the Scottish team consisting of Julie Macpherson and Adam Hall.
