Ankita Raina won both her singles and doubles matches as India defeated Thailand 2-1 in the opening match of the Asia-Oceania Billie Jean King Cup tennis tournament in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
Ankita won the second singles by 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 against Peangtarn Plipuech in a spirited battle that lasted nearly three hours.
Along with Rutuja Bhosle, Ankita continued her good work as the Indian pair recovered from a first-set loss with strong wins against the experienced Luksika Kumkum and Pripuchi. Rutuja had already lost to Luksika, but the Indian team put up a fight as usual thanks to Ankita’s valiant role.
In other matches, China and Japan defeated Asian superpowers Uzbekistan and South Korea with a score of 3-0.
