In T20 cricket, the foundation of the match is very much set in the powerplay for both teams; if the bowling team picks up quick wickets, they move ahead in the contest, and similarly, if the opening batter scores big and impactful runs in the power play, the batting team moves ahead in the match. The opening pair of the teams plays an important role in the success of the team, and here in this article, we have ranked from 1 to 10 for the opening pairs of all the teams for IPL 2024.
Openers are going to play an important role for their teams, as they have in the past few years. When you look at the average score of teams in the powerplay, the teams that score big in the first six overs always perform really well in the season.

Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal (RR)
The number one opening pair belongs to the Rajasthan Royals because they have the best opening pair for the IPL 2024, which consists of dynamic and destructive players like Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal. If you remember, in the 2022 season, Jos Buttler took the team to the final because of his batting. He scored four hundred in that season, and the support he got from the left-hander was the real key for the Rajasthan Royals. The opening pair can take a game away from the opposition in the powerplay, and we have seen this many times in the IPL, so that’s why they are the best opening pair of the IPL 2024.
Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK)
Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad, the openers of CSK are the most consistent and dangerous pair from the last few seasons. CSK’s opening pair played an important role in the success of the franchise. Their openers can attack, they can consolidate the inning, and more importantly, they can play according to situations and conditions, and those things combined make them the second-best opening pair of the IPL 2024.
Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis (RCB)
The 3rd number pair on our list is the divine pair of Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis. There were a lot of questions about the pair, but they shut up all the questions with their brilliant performances in the last season, and in IPL 2024 they can repeat the same stuff without any doubt because both are the fittest cricketers in the world. Form is not an issue with them. So, it will be interesting to see how they perform this season.
Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha (GT)
In the last season, Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha emerged as one of the best opening pairs of the tournament. They played in great combination, as Shubman Gill was playing as an anchor, and on the other hand, Wriddhiman Saha was playing an attacking brand of cricket, and that’s the reason for the good performance from the team. The same opening pair will be there for the Gujarat Titans, and once again, they can bang on the biggest stage.
KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal (LSG)
Lucknow Super Giants are at number 5 on our list because they have solid opening options, and this season they are most likely to open with Kl Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal. These two Indian batters can adapt to any condition and have all the gear in their bag. The main thing that makes the opening pair dynamic is their consistency. These two players play very sensible cricket, and LSG will be hoping they deliver in the IPL 2024.
Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan (MI)
The sixth opening pair of the IPL 2024 belongs to the Mumbai Indians. On paper, they look one of the best because they are Indian and have been in the IPL for a long time. In reality, when you look at stars, the opening pair never delivered on a consistent basis, as Rohit Sharma’s form has been very dipped over the last 5 IPL seasons. Ishan Kishan is a clean hitter, but when it comes to rotating the strike, he always struggles. They also lose wickets early in the powerplay, and in their healthy average rate, there is a big hand between Cameron Green and Suryakumar Yadav sometimes.
David Warner and Prithvi Shaw (DC)
From two seasons now, the opening pair of David Warner and Prithvi Shaw was one of the best in the entire league because of the destructive style of their batting, but from the last two seasons, Prithvi Shaw has been out of form, and that’s the reason they are at number seven on the list, and they don’t have backup openers for the replacement of Prithvi Shaw. David Warner and Prithvi Shaw are more likely to open again for the Delhi Capitals. The form-dipping form of Prithvi Shaw will be an issue, and also from the last few seasons, David Warner has struggled with his strike rate in the IPL.
Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh (PBKS)
In the IPL 2023, Shikhar Dhawan and Prabhsimran Singh were the two openers; most of the season, they both opened the innings for the Punjab Kings. In this season, Jonny Bairstow will also be there to open the innings, but this time he is most likely to play at number three for the team. The form of their skipper Shikhar Dhawan will be an issue, as will the case with Prabhsimran Singh, who also struggles in different conditions. The uncertainty of the openers is the main reason why the Punjab Kings are at the bottom of the list.
Mayank Agarwal and Travis Head (SRH)
The Hyderabad-based franchise has plenty of options for the opening slot; Mayank Agarwal, Abhishekh Sharma, and Travis Head are there for the opening positions. Mayank Agarwal has two worst seasons, and Travis Head could struggle against spin in the India condition. The reason they are at the bottom of our list is that their opening combination is uncertain and there is no clarity on the opening slot.
Jason Roy and KS Bharat (KKR)
Kolkata is the team that made so many changes in their opening combination last season; they even tried six new opening combinations in the 2022 season. They scored an average score of 50 in the powerplay with a 2.1 wicket ratio, and for the IPL 2024, they don’t have as many options as last season. Jason Roy and KS Bharat are the more likable openers for the upcoming season. Jason Roy struggles against spin, and KS Bharat’s strike rate has been an issue.
