The 2023 ICC ODI World Cup will start in October this year and BCCI in India has started the process for the team’s build-up and shortlisted 20 players for the final squad. These players of the Indian cricket team will be monitored in the leadup to the competition and the National Cricket Academy (NCA) will also coordinate with their respective IPL teams to ensure they avoid injuries.
According to a report by Cricbuzz, these 20 players will be rotated in the team’s upcoming tours and competitions for proper training & preparations for the tournament.
It has been learned that, on Sunday, January 1, 2023, Board secretary Jay Shah met Head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit Sharma, NCA head VVS Laxman and chief selector Chetan Sharma and brainstormed for nearly four hours in a Mumbai 5-star hotel before coming up with the list of players. BCCI president Roger Binny while currently in Australia, attended the meeting through video conferencing.
The report quoted a source from BCCI as saying,
“It was a very constructive and fruitful meeting where we reviewed the past performance and planned for future events, including World Cup and World Test Championship (WTC). We will give preference for international cricket while making sure the IPL is not diluted,”
The BCCI said in a media release on Sunday.
“Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for ICC CWC 2023, the NCA will work in tandem with the IPL Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the IPL 2023,”
“The emerging players will have to play a substantial domestic season to be eligible for selection to the national team,”
Additionally, the Yo-Yo Test and Dexa will now be mandatory for the selection criteria. The Yo-Yo tests were mandatory during the Virat Kohli-Shastri regime.
