India’s men’s and women’s cricket teams have received approval from BCCI to compete for the first time in the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will take place in Hangzhou from September to October. The BCCI Apex Council decided to send a full strength squad for the women’s competition during a meeting in Mumbai.

On both occasions in 2010 and 2014, India did not participate in cricket despite its inclusion in the Asian Games. The cricket competition in Hangzhou Asian Games will use the same T20 format as in the 2010 and 2014 tournaments.

A backup Indian squad will compete in the men’s competition on September 28 while a full-strength Indian team will compete in the women’s competition on September 19. The men’s team’s performance in the game is crucial because India will be hosting the ODI World Cup starting on October 5.

The BCCI stated in a letter that fielding a squad in the Asian Games would be difficult due to the busy international calendar, but they emphasized the importance of supporting the national cause. India will be the favorite to win gold in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The board said on Friday,

“Through effective planning, communication and coordination, the BCCI aims to navigate those challenges successfully and contribute to the national cause by fielding a team in both men’s and women’s category in line with the Government of India’s directions,”

In addition, the BCCI will apply the Impact Player Rule from the Indian Premier League to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the country’s top T20 competition. The competition will start on October 16. The Impact Player was first used in SMAT last season, but it had to be brought in and identified before to the end of the 14th over.

The Indian Premier League frequently applied the Impact Player rule, which prohibited the usage of all-around players in the competition.
