The commencement of the 17th edition of the IPL is scheduled for March 22, 2024. As the kickoff for IPL 2024 approaches within the next month, every team is anticipating a roster in optimal health for the competition. Given the extensive schedule of cricket in the contemporary era, a surge in injuries has been observed, prompting several players to strive against time to achieve full fitness for IPL 2024. In this context, let’s examine three teams grappling with injury concerns in the lead-up to IPL 2024.

#1 Chennai Super Kings

The Kiwi trio consisting of Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, and Daryl Mitchell is currently dealing with injuries. Devon Conway sustained a thumb injury in the second T20I against Australia, preventing him from batting in that match and causing him to sit out the third T20I as well. Rachin Ravindra was sidelined for the second and third T20Is against Australia on February 23rd and 25th, 2024, respectively, due to a knee injury. Daryl Mitchell, on the other hand, was unable to participate in the second Test against South Africa and the entire T20I series against Australia due to a foot injury. The extent of his recovery remains uncertain, casting doubt on his availability for the Test series against Australia starting on February 29, 2024, and subsequently for IPL 2024.

Shivam Dube, the standout performer for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy this season after an impressive IPL 2023, has unfortunately been sidelined for the remainder of the Ranji Trophy 2024 due to a side strain injury. Meanwhile, Mustafizur Rahman, the Bangladeshi pacer, sustained a head injury last week during a practice session in Chattogram, necessitating five stitches.

#2 Mumbai Indians

Pandya sustained an ankle injury that led to his absence for the remainder of the World Cup and subsequent matches. Despite Pandya’s dedicated efforts in improving his fitness, it remains uncertain whether he will be fully match-ready for the upcoming IPL. Surya Kumar Yadav, commonly known as SKY, has been inactive since mid-December 2023 and had surgery for a sports hernia in Germany on January 17, 2024. Currently undergoing rehabilitation, his participation in the upcoming IPL season is questionable. Ishan Kishan, although not injured, has been away from the game for the past few months, taking a break and recently resuming training.

#3 Gujarat Titans

The leading wicket-taker of IPL 2023 will not be participating in the upcoming IPL 2024. Shami, who hasn’t played competitive cricket since his outstanding performance in the 2023 World Cup, is set to sit out the forthcoming IPL season due to an ankle injury. The absence of Shami is a significant setback for the GT franchise, and they are faced with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for the pace bowler. Additionally, Rashid Khan has been dealing with a back injury for the past few months, causing him to miss the PSL and Afghanistan’s recent tour of Sri Lanka. Despite undergoing back surgery, Khan is currently racing against time to regain match fitness for IPL 2024.
