She has already represented senior Bengal in the women’s national championship including this year where Bengal was runners-up in the group league and qualified for the main round of the competition. Besides, Barnali was one of the key members in East Bengal who won the Kolkata Women’s Premier League last season.

The Beginning

Barnali Karar hails from a remote village in the Hooghly district in West Bengal named Diara. Her father Lakkhikanta Karar sells bananas in the local market. Following her parents’ continuous encouragement, Barnali began to play football at a local ground in 2011. She played barefoot that time. Playing with local boys as well as with some older girls, Barnali gained confidence gradually. Following local coach Binoy Banerjee’s advice and initiative, the 25-year-old girl entered the Kolkata team and since 2013 she has represented several teams including Youth Sporting, Taltala Dipti Sangha, Kolkata Police, and Southern Samity. She finally signed for East Bengal in the last season.

The Regret of Barnali Karar

Barnali regrets that she was benched from the beginning in most of the Kolkata Premier League matches for East Bengal last season. Significantly, playing as the substitute after the lemon breaks in most of the matches, Barnali earned applause from the coach Sujata Kar and other footballers also. She said on the issue,

“Coach likes me. I have played under her guidance in several teams before. She knows my game, and my ability to work hard and roam around the ground. Still, I do not know why I was not in the starting eleven.”

Barnali Karar’s Aim

Barnali Karar has been called up in East Bengal’s training for the team’s forthcoming participation in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) this season. She is happy to have obtained the opportunity to play in IWL. Barnali added,

“I have played in IWL once before, representing another Kolkata side Chandni Sporting, but I could not get the scope of flourishing as we crashed out in the early stage. This time, if I am in the starting eleven & I must prove my mettle.”

Barnali’s only dream is to represent the senior Indian team. She concluded,

“I have never taken part in any international competition. If I perform in the IWL, I might get a national call-up. My focus is fully on the IWL now.”
