Babita Phogat, a former wrestler and leader of the Bhariya Janta Party (BJP), criticised Sakshi Malik and Satyawart Kadian for making outrageous claims in a video statement on Saturday. Gold medalist Babita Phogat claimed on social media that Sakshi and her husband had turned into Congress’s puppets.

She claimed that protesting wrestlers met Congress leaders rather than the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and placing their trust in the legal system.

On Saturday, Sakshi and Satyawart issued a video to explain the wrestlers’ position regarding the display against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.

They said that the wrestlers’ conflict is with Bruj Bhushan rather than the government. The two wrestlers added that they are not protesting for political reasons.

According to Satywart, the wrestlers obtained police approval for their protest at Jantar Mantar by using a letter that is signed by two BJP officials, one of whom is Babita. According to the wrestler, Tirath Rana was the other BJP politician who signed the letter.

Babita denied signing any letters for protestors requesting permission from the police to demonstrate in a statement she made on her social media. Babita wrote,

“Don’t say such a thing that you have to hide after saying it, my friend. Yesterday, I felt very sad and laughed too when I was watching the video of my younger sister and her husband. First of all, I want to make it clear that the permission paper which the younger sister (Malik) was showing did not have my signature or my name anywhere on it. There is no proof of consent and neither is it remotely my concern.”

The BJP leader claimed that she had urged the protesting wrestlers to meet the prime minister and have confidence in the country’s judicial system, but they chose to approach Congress leaders instead.

Babita continued by referring to the wrestlers in protest as “puppets of Congress.” She further added that the nation is shamed by their threat to submerge the medals in the Ganga.

Babita further wrote,

“The people of the country are now getting a clear image of your intentions. Your protest during the new Parliament inauguration day and the threat of immersing medals in the Ganga has embarrassed the country… The people of the country have understood that you have become a puppet in the hands of the Congress…Now the time has come that you should tell your real intention.”
