Australian Open: Indian Men’s Doubles Challenge Ends in the 1st Round

Indian Tennis legend Leander Paes along with Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and the pair of Rohan Bopanna-Divij Sharan all lost in the first round of men’s doubles at Melbourne Park on Wednesday i.e, 16 January 2019, leading to an end of the Indian Double’s campaign.

Leander Paes lost in straight sets with his partner Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela while Bopanna-Sharan and Jeevan-Nicholas Monroe lost in three sets.

Leander had a miserable day in the Australian Open at the Melbourne Park as he lost his men’s doubles Round of 64 matches against the American-New Zealand pairing of Austin Krajicek-Artem Sitak, 5-7, 6-7(4) in just an hour and 20 minutes.

Paes and Reyes-Verala were simply blown over by the opponents’ power and accuracy. Krajicek-Sitak not only hit far more winners at Paes-Reyes-Verala but also aced them 11 to 2.

The duo Bopanna and Sharan lost too

Bopanna and Sharan who were seeded 15th at the year’s first Grand Slam tournament lost to an unseeded Spanish pair Pablo Carreno Busta-Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 1-6, 6-4, 5-7 in 1 hour and 46 minutes.

Bopanna-Sharan hit 36 winners while the Spanish pair of Pablo Carreno Busta- Guillermo Gracia-Lopez who hit 13 but the Spanish pair were good in all other aspects.

Jeevan-Monroe were up against a German-Croatian pair of Kevin Krawietz-Nikola Mektic and battled for two hours and 20 minutes but ultimately lost before 6-4, 6-7(8), 5-7 and crashed out of the tournament.

Krawietz-Mektic were too dominant and powerful as compared to Jeevan- Monroe. The German-Croatian pair hit 10 aces while Jeevan-Monroe hit only two.

On the other hand, big international stars like Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova (who is also the defending champion) have sailed to the third round.
