“Clearly with the FIFA World Cup kicking off this evening, there are a lot of eyes on Auckland. The government has spoken to FIFA organizers this morning and the tournament will proceed as planned,”

“I want to reiterate that there is no wider national security threat. This appears to be the actions of one individual,”

NZ Football has officially confirmed the safety of the national contingent in the wake of the unexpected incident. The shooting occurred near the accommodation of the Norwegian team, and they also verified their safety. The team assured that they will adhere to any instructions from the authorities with utmost caution.

Norway skipper Maren Mjelde stated,

“At first we didn’t know what was going on, but eventually there were updates on TV and the local media,”

“We felt safe the whole time. FIFA has a good security system at the hotel and we have our own security officer in the squad,”

Later on Thursday, Norway and New Zealand scheduled to play in the opening match of the tournament at Auckland’s Eden Park.
