Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu’s hopes of a good outing at the 2023 Asian Weightlifting Championships were dashed as she finished in a disappointing sixth place. Despite being the Tokyo Olympics silver medallist, she could only manage two good lifts, lifting 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk, resulting in an underwhelming overall effort of 194kg.
Chanu’s personal best is 88kg in snatch and 119kg in clean and jerk, making her performance at the Asian Championships even more disappointing. She only managed one good lift in snatch. Chanu withdrew from the competition after her first clean and jerk attempt.
Head coach Vijay Sharma said,
”Mira was experiencing some irritation in her left hip joint. If we had continued with lifts it could have resulted in an injury, so we decided not to risk it.”
Chanu’s coach, Vijay Sharma, had previously stated that their focus was solely on Olympic qualifiers, with the plan to peak at the Asian Games and events closer to the Olympics next year. Despite her underwhelming performance at the Asian Championships, Chanu has her sights set on an Asian Games medal, which is the only one missing from her trophy cabinet.
Japan’s Rira Suzuki, who was competing in the ‘B’ group, finished with the same total of 194kg (83kg+111kg) as Chanu. However, since she completed her lift before Chanu, she finished ahead of the Indian.
Chanu has been attempting to breach the 90kg mark in snatch since 2020, but Sharma had previously stated that she was unlikely to attempt it at the Asian Championships. In 2021 Asian Championships, Chanu returned home with a bronze medal and a world record in clean and jerk (119kg).
