The Indian men’s team smoothly advanced to the semifinals of the 26th ITTF-Asian Table Tennis Championships 2023 in Pyeongchang, South Korea, on Monday, while the women’s team faced elimination. Featuring prominent players like Achanta Sharath Kamal, G Sathiyan, and Harmeet Desai, the men’s team secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Singapore, securing their place in the semifinals and guaranteeing India a medal.
This achievement marks India’s fifth medal in the championships since 1972, with the team previously clinching four bronze medals, three of which were earned by the Indian men during the last edition in 2021. The men’s table tennis team’s next objective is to obtain a quota for the Paris Olympics. They aim to achieve this by earning victories in both the semifinal and final matches of the ongoing tournament, which serves as an Olympic qualifying event.
To secure this opportunity, they must first overcome Chinese Taipei in order to advance to the final round, where they will face a formidable adversary, China. It’s important to note that, only the tournament champion will earn the right to secure a quota place for the 2024 Olympic Games.
