A lesser known fact about Shahrukh Khan is that he owes his entire film career to the sport of football. An active football and hockey player, Khan won the Sword of Honour. This was his school, St. Columba’s school’s highest sports award.

Naturally, he wanted to make a career in sports itself. But a grievous shoulder injury meant he could never pursue sports competitively.

He then started acting in stage plays and received rave praises for his imitation of Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar.  Later, he went on to feature in a television series, Dil Dariya and the rest is history.

Later, in 2008, Shahrukh Khan bought an IPL cricket team, known as Kolkata Knight Riders. He often mentions this move as a “dream come true” for him. The Kolkata based franchise was bought in association with friend Juhi Chawla, for a total of ₹298 crores.

Likewise, a couple of other Bollywood personalities were among the owners of other IPL teams. But unlike his film industry counterparts, he further deepened his attachment in the sport by investing in two other cricketing franchises Trinbago Knight Riders and Cape Town Knight Riders. Consequently, in 2015, TKR won the Carribean Premier League in their inaugural season.

On the other hand, CTKR will see a major transition in the current squad, with marquee players Chris Gayle and JP Duminy coming in.

As a result of these shrewd business deals, Kolkata Knight Riders saw a record revenue of 125 crores last year.

Apart from cricket, certain reports suggested that Shahrukh Khan is considering to buy an I-League football team, most preferably the city of Kolkata.
