Asian Para Games: Armless Archer Sheetal Devi Becomes 1st Indian Woman to Clinch 2 Golds in Single Edition

Sheetal Devi, a teenage archer with no arms, achieved a historic feat by becoming the first Indian woman to secure two gold medals in a single edition of the Asian Para Games. This remarkable achievement added to India’s impressive tally, which reached 99 medals on the penultimate day of the competition. India’s medal haul on Friday included 17 medals, with seven of them being gold. Shuttlers played a significant role in this success, contributing the highest number of medals, with eight in total, including four gold medals.

As the Hangzhou Asian Para Games near its conclusion, India currently holds the sixth position in the medal standings. They have secured 25 gold, 29 silver, and 45 bronze medals, trailing behind China (196 gold, 159 silver, 138 bronze), Japan (39 gold, 44 silver, 56 bronze), Iran (39 gold, 39 silver, 37 bronze), Korea (28 gold, 30 silver, 37 bronze), and Indonesia (26 gold, 21 silver, 32 bronze).

In terms of the total number of medals, India occupies the fourth spot. India surpassed their previous best performance at the Asian Para Games, achieving a total of 72 medals (15 gold, 24 silver, 33 bronze) during the 2018 edition.

The nation is poised to secure an impressive achievement by securing 100 medals in the ongoing Hangzhou Asian Para Games. Athletes accomplished a record-breaking haul of 107 medals during the Hangzhou Asian Games that took place from September 23 to October 8. On Friday, Sheetal achieved victory in the women’s individual compound event, adding another gold medal to her collection.
