India has selected a four-member Indian weightlifting team for the 2023 Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. The squad comprises both seasoned athletes and ones who will be looking to make their mark in the game.
Tokyo 2020 Silver medalist Mirabai Chanu and Commonwealth Games 2022 winner Achinta Sheuli will feature in the four-member squad for the Asian Games 2023.
It is speculated that Mirabai will compete in the 49 Kg category, whereas Achinta will participate in the 73 kg category; wherein both of them will try to give it their best. Sheuli is a rising star in Indian weightlifting and is expected to be one of the contenders for a medal in the 73 kg category at the Asian Games.
It is worth mentioning here that the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships gold medal winner Bindyarani Devi has also been included in the team. The 24-year-old talented athlete is expected to compete in the 55 kg women’s division.

Furthermore, N Ajith, the Reigning National Games champion, will be the final member of the weightlifting squad headed for Hangzhou. The weightlifter, hailing from the state of Tamil Nadu will also compete in the 73 Kg category, along with his teammate Achinta Sheuli. Ajith is a talented weightlifter who is expected to give a good account of himself at the Asian Games.
In order to give it her best, the two-time commonwealth games gold medal winner Mirabai Chanu is currently training at St Louis’ SQUAT University under Dr. Aron Horschig. The 28-year-old recently returned to the competitive scene in May after having undergone a five-month rehabilitation program, following a hip surgery she underwent last December. Chanu is the most experienced member of the Indian weightlifting squad and is expected to be one of the favorites for a medal in the 49kg category at the Asian Games.
In the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023 which was held in Jinju, Republic of Korea, which was Chanu’s only competitive season this season, she managed to secure the sixth position. She will definitely be looking forward to improving this.
Besides CHanu, Bindyarani Devi is also undergoing training at St. Louis. Devi won two silver medals in the women’s 55kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2023, which was held in South Korea back in May. Devi is a young and upcoming weightlifter who is expected to make her mark at the Asian Games.

Furthermore, Indian weightlifters N Ajith and Achinta Sheuli, at the Asian Championships 2023 in May, which was their first competition of the season, managed to finish overall ninth and 10th, respectively, in the men’s 73kg event.
It is worth mentioning here that Youth Olympic Games stalwart, Jeremy Lalrinnunga, who started the 2023 season with a bang by winning the silver medal in the 67 kg category at the Asian Championships 2023 held in May, missed out on being included in the squad for the Asian Games, as he is currently recovering from a slip disc injury.
The Indian weightlifting squad for the 2023 Asian Games is a strong one and is expected to challenge for medals in all three categories. Chanu and Sheuli are the two main medal hopes for India, but Devi and Ajith will also be looking to make their mark. The Indian team will be hoping to improve their performance at the 2018 Asian Games, where they won two silver medals and one bronze medal.
The 2023 Asian Games will be a major test for the Indian weightlifting team. The competition will be tough, but the Indian team has the talent to challenge for medals. The team will be hoping to make the country proud and bring home some medals from Hangzhou.
