Asian Games 2023: Indian Tennis Team

The All India Tennis Association (AITA) revealed a a 12-member Indian Tennis team for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.

The 19th Asian Games, originally scheduled for 2022, was postponed due to the Covid-19 and will now take place in September-October, 2023 in Hangzhou, China.

Indian tennis stars Rohan Bopanna, Sumit Nagal, and Ankita Raina have secured their spots in the country’s tennis contingent. Saketh Myneni, who partnered with Sania Mirza to claim a mixed doubles gold medal during the 2014 Asian Games, has also earned a place on the Indian roster.

Ankita Raina, who secured a bronze medal in the previous singles category, will lead the women’s representation for India. Raina holds the 206th position in the WTA rankings, surpassing Karman Kaur Thandi by 28 ranks, and is India’s highest-ranked women’s doubles player at a global rank of 149.

Seasoned player Rohan Bopanna will take charge of the men’s team. Bopanna recently achieved a top 10 position in the ATP doubles rankings, marking his return since June 2016, and has claimed two ATP titles this year.

The 2018 Asian Games men’s doubles gold medalist, Rohan Bopanna, will not be partnering with Divij Sharan for this edition’s games, as Sharan is not part of the Indian squad.

Sumit Nagal will be the key contender for India in the singles category, holding the highest singles ranking among Indian players at world No. 226. Yuki Bhambri, who secured the bronze medal in men’s singles during the 2014 Asian Games, and Ramkumar Ramanathan have both successfully secured positions within the team as well.

Bopanna is likely to partner with Ramkumar for the doubles event, while Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni will form another doubles pair.

Absence of Sania Mirza & Others in Asian Games 2023

Earlier this year, Sania Mirza concluded her professional tennis career, leading to her non-participation in the Indian squad. Mirza’s track record includes an remarkable array of Asian Games medals, comprising two gold, three silver, and three bronze medals across diverse competitions.

Prajnesh Gunneswaran, who secured the bronze medal in men’s singles during the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, will be absent as well from the team due to his battle with injuries this year.
