The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has revealed the Indian shooting team for the rifle and pistol events at the upcoming Asian Games 2023, Hangzhou. The team was finalized after the final national selection trials for elite rifle and pistol shooters concluded at Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range in New Delhi. A provisional squad for shotgun shooters for the Hangzhou Games and Baku world championship had been announced earlier.

A total of 21 shooters, with 11 in pistol and 10 in rifle, will represent India at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China from September 23 to October 8. Notable names like Manu Bhaker, Divyansh Singh Panwar, and Rudrankksh Balasaheb Patil are part of the Indian shooting team.

While the pistol teams remain unchanged for both the Asian Games and world championships, there will be three changes in the rifle team for the Asian Games. Each country can send a maximum of five shooters for the men’s and women’s rifle events, while no such restrictions apply for the world championships.

The NRAI considered scores from four trials and performances at a few international competitions in the first half of 2023 to finalize the provisional shotgun teams.

Shooters to Miss Out Asian Games 2023

The women’s rifle section has undergone significant changes as olympians Anjum Moudgil and Elavenil Valarivan are not part of either team. Instead, the 10m air rifle event will now feature Ramita Jindal, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ashi Chouksey, while Sift Kaur Samra and Manini Kaushik will participate in the 50m rifle 3 positions.

Despite performing well in the trials and being among the top three, Tilotamma Sen missed out on a spot in the women’s 10m air rifle due to the rule that only permits five rifle shooters from each gender from a National Olympic Committee (NOC) to compete. Chouksey secured her spot in both the 3 positions event and the 10m air rifle, leaving Sen disappointed.

The provisional shotgun squad, announced earlier, had some surprises, as veterans like Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Manavjit Singh Sandhu were not included. Instead, younger talents like Ganemat Sekhon and Darsha Rathore were featured in the proposed shotgun squads.

Saurabh Chaudhary and Abhishek Verma, who secured a remarkable double podium for India in the men’s 10m air pistol event in 2018, unfortunately did not make the cut for the Hangzhou trip, despite putting up spirited performances during the final selection trials. They secured the eighth and fourteenth positions respectively. Instead, Sarabjot Singh, Shiva Narwal, and Arjun Cheema, who emerged as the top 3 performers in the trials, will be representing India in the upcoming event.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar gained widespread recognition in 2019 and has been selected to compete in both the men’s 10m air rifle and 50m rifle 3 positions events. Additionally, he has secured a spot in the Air rifle mixed team event, making him the sole rifle shooter to participate in three medal events. Esha Singh, a pistol shooter, is the only other Indian athlete to be involved in three medal events. Among rifle shooters, Divyansh Singh Panwar and Ashi Chouksey are the two individuals who will be competing in two medal events. Similarly, pistol shooters Sarabjot Singh, Shiva Narwal, and Divya TS, all members of the mixed team event, will also be participating in two medal events.
