The Indian Golf team for the upcoming Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, has been revealed by Indian golf authorities. Scheduled to occur from September 23 to October 8, 2023, this prestigious tournament will witness the Indian team demonstrating their exceptional abilities on the field.
Avani Prashanth and Pranavi Urs emerged as the top performers in the Indian Golf Union’s selection trials for the Asian Games 2023 held at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club in Kolkata. These two players from Bengaluru, along with Olympian Aditi Ashok, secured their positions in the Indian women’s golf team for the upcoming continental event. Aditi Ashok, who narrowly missed out on a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, received a direct entry based on her ranking and thus did not participate in the trials.
Pranavi Urs, a 20-year-old, and 16-year-old Avani Prashanth, who achieved victory at the Queen Sirikit Cup 2023 in the Philippines earlier this year, both tied for the lead with an impressive score of 10-under 206.
Following closely was Tvesa Malik in the third position with a score of nine-under. Despite having received a direct entry last year based on her rankings, Malik fell short this time and didn’t make the cut for the Asian Games.
Notably absent from the Indian team for the Asian Games in China will be Diksha Dagar, who participated in the Tokyo Olympics. She secured fifth place in the trials with a score of three-under 213.
Moving to the men’s trials, Khalin Joshi led the field, closely trailed by SSP Chawrasia. Khalin Joshi achieved a total score of 13-under 203, while SSP Chawrasia managed to secure second place with a score of 11-under 205.
Khalin Joshi and SSP Chawrasia will be joining Anirban Lahiri and Shubhankar Sharma in the Indian men’s golf team. Lahiri and Sharma received direct entries based on their rankings and thus didn’t participate in the trials. Notably, Lahiri was part of the Indian golf team that secured silver at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha.
Despite being a silver medalist in the 2010 Asian Games, Rashid Khan couldn’t secure a spot this time, finishing fifth with a score of six-under 210.
In total, 19 male and 19 female golfers competed for the available Asian Games spots.
The Asian Games 2023 are scheduled to take place in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8.
