Indian cricketer KL Rahul‘s participation in India’s initial two matches of the 2023 Asia Cup is in doubt, as he faced an exclusion from the opening phase of the competition, which is scheduled to follow a one-day format this year. Having successfully completed his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, Rahul was designated as a member of India’s 18-player squad for the continental tournament.

Earlier this year, Rahul encountered a thigh injury while participating in IPL 2023. Following this, he underwent a surgical procedure in England. After recuperating at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), the prominent top-order batsman rejoined the Indian squad for a training camp in Alur, Karnataka.

The camp wrapped up on Tuesday. Nonetheless, Rahul Dravid, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has indicated that despite Rahul’s commendable recovery, he won’t be able to participate in the upcoming matches against Pakistan and Nepal.

India is set to commence their tournament against Pakistan on September 2 in Pallekele, followed by a match against Nepal on September 4. The fitness of India’s middle-order pair, Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, has been a cause for concern over an extended period.

Shreyas Iyer had to undergo a back surgery, which subsequently sidelined him for a considerable duration. According to Dravid, the team’s management is adopting a prudent strategy regarding Rahul’s recuperation. However, in Iyer’s case, he has successfully met all the recovery criteria, with the only missing piece being some match practice.
