R. Ashwin Win’s ICC Men’s Player Of The Month Award: February

India’s star off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin won the title of ICC men’s Player of the Month (February) on Tuesday. He was selected for his terrific performance against England in a four-match Test series. With the series win Indian side has qualified for the World Test Championship final. England’s Tammy Beaumont was chosen as the women’s Player of the Month.

Ashwin performed magically with both bat and ball. He scored a century (106) in the 2nd test. It led to India’s victory over England at Chennai (2nd test). Also, Ashwin completed his 400 test wickets in the third Test at Ahmedabad.

Along with a century, Ashwin registered 24 wickets against England in February (32 in series). This helped the Indian side win the four-match Test series 3-1. With bat Ashwin scored a total of 176 runs in February (192 in series). Ashwin was the unanimous choice to win in the men’s category for February. He garnered the most votes in the fan vote, the ICC spokesperson said in a statement.

Joe Root (England Test captain) scored 333 runs and 6 wickets in 3 Tests against India. W.I Test player Kyle Mayers, scored a match-winning 210 to help his team successfully chase 395. It led to W.I winning the first Test against Bangladesh. Alongside Ashwin, these were the other 2 batsmen nominated  for the honor.

Beaumont played three ODIs in February (against New Zealand). She scored fifty plus in each of the matches, totaling 231 runs.

Ian Bishop, Commenting on Ashwin’s performance in February, who also represents the ICC Voting Academy said: “Ashwin’s consistent performance with both bat and ball, helped his team win a very important series. His century in the second Test was a masterclass as it came when the England side was trying to put their feet back into the match.”

On Beaumont, Bishop said, “Three back-to-back half centuries, of which two helped her team win the match was simply outstanding.”
