Antim Panghal Grapples with Injury, Misses Shot at Asian Championships

As Indian wrestling appeared to be making a comeback, Antim Panghal, a prominent medal hopeful, faced a setback due to an injury. Unfortunately, she will be absent from the initial round of wrestling trials. With only a few days remaining before the trials for the Asian Championships and the continental Olympic qualifiers, Antim will miss both events. Despite her victory in the Paris Olympics, securing a bronze medal in the women’s 53 kg category at the World Championships last year, she was exempt from participating in the Olympic qualifiers. However, the Asian Championship held significance for Antim Panghal, given the presence of Japanese wrestlers in the competition. The reported injury is a muscle strain, and it is anticipated that she will recover by the end of March.

Antim, the inaugural U-20 World Champion from India, had an outstanding performance in 2023, securing a bronze medal at the World Championships, an impressive debut medal at the Asian Games, and clinching a quota for the Paris Olympics. In the 53 kg category, Antim has emerged as a formidable contender against the accomplished wrestler Vinesh Phogat. Both athletes are anticipated to vie for the coveted spot in the Paris Olympics. Notably, India has obtained only one wrestling quota for the Paris Olympics, prompting the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) to organize trials this month. These trials will determine the team for the upcoming Asian Championships, followed by the Continental Olympics qualifiers in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.
