Anshuman Bhattacharya is Bengal’s one of the leading table tennis coaches right now. He was a professional player in the 80s and 90s. He even represented Bengal in the junior national championships. Then his coaching life began in the late 90s and he has been in coaching for more than three decades. His wife Kuntali Bhattacharya was also a player and assists her husband in coaching. Anshuman has built up a TT coaching center in Kolkata, named Ankur Bhattacharya Table Tennis Academy where he trains around selected 10 potential paddlers.
Recognition as a coach
Ankur Bhattacharya is the perfect example of Anshuman’s coaching success. Anshuman has trained his son as India’s number-one-ranked junior paddler as well as the world’s 22nd-ranked junior paddler after the last 15 years of incredibly hard work.
The 53-year-old Anshuman stated,
“Even at this age, I practice with Ankur for around 9 to 10 hours every day. I have bought modern pieces of equipment which help me to conduct a variety of multi-ball training. After Ankur has earned fame, more potential boys like Shounak Burman (national junior paddler), and Tuhin Basak (national-ranking player) are coming to me to learn the game.”
Anshuman was also offered by Bangladesh Table Tennis Federation (BTTF) to work as the chief national coach. And under Anshuman’s coaching, Bangladesh senior national team acquired eight bronze medals and two silver medals in the recently-held South Asian Youth TT Championship in Arunachal. Anshuman is the third coach from Bengal to have worked as the chief coach in other countries as two other Bengal, Jayanta Pushilal worked as a coach in the USA and Mihir Ghosh is the other who worked as the coach of the Bangladesh national team and the national coach of Fiji national side.
Significantly, even though BTTF is planning to rope coaches from China, the federation has also asked Anshuman to continue with the national team as a full-time coach. At the same time, during the South Asian TT championship, countries like Nepal and Bhutan expressed interest in roping Anshuman as the head coach of their respective national teams.
