Angelo Mathews’ World Cup Shock: Sri Lankan Star Timed Out in Bangladesh Showdown

In an unexpected twist of fate, Sri Lanka’s versatile player Angelo Mathews found himself being timed out in an international cricket match during the World Cup 2023, while facing Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

Mathews encountered an unfortunate incident when the strap of his helmet snapped while he was heading out to bat. During the wait for a replacement, Shakib made an appeal, resulting in Mathews being declared out. Once Shakib opted to uphold the decision, the umpires were left with no choice.

Mathews came in to bat following Shakib’s dismissal of Sadeera Samarawickrama, who had scored 41 runs from 42 balls. The MCC Rule Book States,

“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,”

Nevertheless, the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 playing conditions pin the time at 2 minutes. The statement reads,

“After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out,”
