Anand Velkumar: 1st Indian to clinch medal at the world speed skating games

The Indian Virtuoso: Anand Velkumar 

Earlier this month, the world speed skating Game 2021 was held in Mundiales Ibague and Anand Velkumar inscribed his golden name in the history of skating by bagging a silver medal.

He is an inspiration for all the aspirants and he has brought laurels to the nation with his excellent achievement at the event. Anand is thus the first Indian to clinch a medal at the event. He clocked 24. 14. 845 seconds in the Junior 15km Elimination Final. 

However, the gold medal was won by Columbian skater Miguel Fonseca and a bronze by Portuguese skater Marco Lira. Meanwhile, Velkumar outwitted them with his stunning performance and won a silver medal.

The victory of Velkumar has opened his way to the World Games to be held in the United States of America (USA) and the game will now also be a part of the Asian Games 2022.

Apart from Velkumar, other Indian participants also succeeded in the event of Ibague including Gurkeerat Singh and Siddhant Kamble (8th), Dhanush Babu (6th), Aarthy Kasturi Raj (10th). 

After his victory, Velkumar said “I can’t express what I feel, is the first medal for India. It was difficult, especially in the rain, there was a lot of shoving, and everyone was slipping. I was just thinking; we are going to cross the finish line, don’t fall, because it was really difficult in the rain,”
