- Selectors of the Indian cricket team announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming Test series against South Africa.
- KL Rahul was dropped owing to poor form with Shubman Gill receiving a maiden Test call-up.
- The first Test will be played in Vizag followed by Pune and Ranchi. The series will be preceded by a three-match T20I series.
KL Rahul’s exclusion from the upcoming Test series against South Africa was the biggest talking point as Indian national team’s selectors announced the 15-member squad on Thursday. The Karnataka batsman had failed to rediscover his form in the recently concluded test series against West Indies, thus facing the axe. However, Rahul’s loss was another budding batsmen – Shubman Gill’s gain. This was 20-year-old opener’s maiden call-up to the Test squad.
Rahul’s exclusion may also mean that Rohit Sharma gets pushed up the order to open the innings. Having registered solid performances against Windies, both Ajinkya Rahane and Hanuma Vihari were retained in the squad.
Why was Rahul dropped?
Rahul had been on a dry run with the bat of late. In the recently concluded two-Test series tour of the West Indies, Rahul could manage just 101 runs in four innings, at a measly average of 25.25. This may have led to his exclusion from the Indian Test team.
“It is unfortunate that Rahul couldn’t perform consistently. He played well in patches,” chief selector MSK Prasad said after the announcement of the team at BCCI HQ.
Why was Gill selected?
“Shubman Gill has done well both as an opener and a middle-order batsman. So yes, he can be a back-up opener if needed. There is no dearth of openers in the country. We have created a good pool of players. There is Priyank Panchal and Abhmanyu Easwaran who are doing really well in domestic circuit,” he explained.
Where will Rohit play?
“Rohit has been selected in the side as an opener. He will open in the three matches and also for the Board President XI” the chief selector said.
