Cricket is no less than a religion in India. From chawls to plush housing societies. From schools to offices. Cricket is an important element of Indian lives. From a father’s memories to a youngster’s role model, the names of cricketers are taken in every house here. Thus, it is unsurprising to know that many want to pursue cricket as their profession. Afterall, cricketers are one of the most successful sportspersons. But in a competitive environment like cricket where millions dream of donning the famous Blue jersey, where you train also matters. Cricket academies play a vital role in moulding and nurturing budding talents. Although there are many private academies cropping up across the country, today we will talk about The National Cricket Academy which is one of the most reputed of them all.
The need for Cricket Academies
Millions of Indian children aspire to become the next MS Dhoni or Virat Kohli but the lack of support and opportunities force their hands. This is where the status of professional training comes into light. Conflicting to belief, cricket is one sport which has a reach to the grass root levels in India. There are many organisations and schools which provide a better level of training facilities. Some of them train without creating any financial fuss for the player and his/her family. Professional coaching academies shape the player from a young teen to the complete man.
National Cricket Academy
The National Cricket Academy at Bengaluru, Karnataka is the official cricket academy of India. It comes under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). As it is backed by the national bureau, NCA is one of the finest in India. The academy was established in the year 2000 at Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The academy has the distinction of producing several stalwarts. Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, Anil Kumble are few of them. The motto of the academy is to improve the game of cricket in the country. The entire academy has latest functioning and machinery. Even the Indian national team trains here.
All the camps of the men’s national team, A team and under 19 team are held here. With practising pitches and bowling machines, the academy also offers a residential stay to the players. Future in safe hands
India’s Under 19 and ‘A’ team’s coach, Rahul Dravid has been appointed as the head of the National Cricket Academy. The ‘Wall’ successfully coached the Indian U-19 team which led to World Cup glory.
It can only be great that he now plies his trades towards the young players from the start of their careers. No official position has been nominated to Rahul Dravid. He will be responsible for setting up the coaching staff across India.
How to get selected in NCA?
The first place to start with the game should be your school or community centre. If you are playing with friends, you may voluntarily host cricket games of your own. To get admission in National Cricket Academy is a no easy task.
Its dream for many to join National Cricket Academy. Also, the academy hosts cricketers from around the country. The competition here is extremely hard. Some senior players use the NCA to recover from their bad-patch or injuries to regain their form.
At NCA, player selection happens strictly based on performances at the junior and senior domestic circuits. Thus, one cannot find the seat unless the junior selectors of your zone pick you up for their zonal academy.
The zonal academy trainees compete in various tournaments. Based on the performance, the National junior selectors choose the best performers from the tournament for U-19 camp. National Senior selection committee choose the trainees for India A. Keep one thing in mind, your admission depends on your performance and selectors decision.
As we said earlier, one should start early. Play with your school team, inter-collegiate team or a semi-professional team. National Cricket Academy selectors have an eye on these regional tournaments. Selection is tough though!
