Abhinav Mukund is an Indian left-handed batsman who plays for Tamil Nadu at the domestic level. He has a brilliant first-class record and has even scored a triple century in domestic cricket. He has captained Tamil Nadu and India A on various occasions in the past. Mukund has even played seven test matches at the highest level for India.

In the Indian Premier League, Abhinav Mukund has played for the Chennai Super Kings and
Royal Challengers Bangalore. During his early first-class matches, Abhinav shined at the domestic level with brilliant hundreds and reliable consistency. Abhinav Mukund was called to make his test debut against West Indies in 2011.

Abhinav Mukund was born into a cricketing background. His grandfather was a cricketer. Abhinav’s uncle TS Mohan is often regarded among the best fielding coaches in Tamil Nadu and both his parents had been cricketers. His father had been a first-division batsman whereas his mother had played for South Zone and at the university level.

Being born into such a large history of cricketers, it was not surprising that Abhinav too found cricket to be his first love. He has often said that he didn’t have to look beyond his home for inspiration when he had so many crickets in his family. His father coached him and mentored him at the early stages of his cricket.

Domestic Career

Abhinav Mukund scored debut hundreds in both Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup. His excellent start was a sign to everyone that he belonged to the highest level of cricket.
Abhinav was part of the 2008 World Cup-winning Under-19 squad under current Indian Test Captain Virat Kohli. However, he didn’t get to play a game due to his poor form. He played two matches for India U-19 against a tour in Malaysia.
After a poor performance in the Under-19 World Cup, Abhinav came back strong at the
domestic level. He scored a triple hundred displaying his strong mental tenacity.
He became famous for this knock in which he also shared a 462 runs stand with future Indian Test specialist Murali Vijay.

In 2015, Abhinav Mukund played his 100th first-class match against Baroda. He was only 25 then. He made the match even more memorable by hitting his seventh double hundred.
Abhinav Mukund was part of the Albert TUTI Patriots team in the first season of the Tamil Nadu Premier league in 2016. His team ended up winning the title as Abhinav scored a valuable 82 in the finals.

After average international performances, Abhinav Mukund worked on his skill and scored a
a hefty amount of 849 runs in the 2016-17 Ranji Season which included four hundred.
In 2018, Abhinav Mukund was chosen to be India Red’s captain in the 2018-19 Duleep Trophy and was selected for the 2018-19 Deodhar Trophy in India C.

Abhinav Mukund scored 560 runs in the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy. He was the highest
run-scorer that season.

Just after India’s great victory in the 2011 World Cup, Abhinav was selected for the West Indies tour where he made his debut as India rested their star openers, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir.

Despite looking good in the three Caribbean test matches, Abhinav was only able to score one half-century. His display of skill and temperament in the series got him another shot in the England tour later that year. Abhinav scored 49 in the Lord’s test but struggled against swing and was found lackluster. His performance was so troubling that India had to call Virender Sehwag for the next test who had yet not recovered from his injury.

Abhinav was next selected to play against Bangladesh in the lone test in 2017 and was also in the Indian squad for the 2017 home series against Australia. He played one test in the series due to Murali Vijay’s absence. Abhinav Mukund was also part of the lone test against Sri Lanka in Galle. He scored a fifty in the second innings of that match, getting out on a well-played 81.

Indian Premier League

Abhinav has not played many IPL matches. In fact, he has only played three.
He was part of the Chennai Super Kings squad from 2008-2012 and was part of the Royal
Challengers Bangalore in the 2013 season.
