Abhinav Bindra Honoured with Shooting’s Highest Award by ISSF

India’s only individual Olympic gold medalist till date, Abhinav Bindra has been conferred with Blue Cross, the International Shooting Sports Federation’s (ISSF) highest honour at the General Assembly in Munich on Friday. With this honour, he becomes the first ever Indian to be conferred with shooting’s topmost award.

Olympic and World champion Abhinav Bindra has been bestowed with the shooting’s highest award for his exceptional services as the chairman of the ISSF’s Athletes Committee.

Bindra was a member of the ISSF’s Athletes Committee from 2010 to 2014 and he assumed the role of chairman from 2014. He took this role as the chairman of the ISSF’s Athletes Committee from his predecessor legendary American shooter Kimberly Rhode.

During this period Bindra has also received President’s Button and the Diploma of Honour in January 2016 for appreciating his excellent and inspiring journey as a sportsperson and for being an icon for all the shooters worldwide.

The Arjuna awardee after receiving the glorious Blue Cross expressed his humility by writing on his twitter handle “Extremely humbled to receive the @ISSF_Shooting’s highest honour the Blue Cross at the General Assembly in Munich today.”

Prior to this prestigious Blue Cross Award, Bindra received Arjuna award in 2000, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2001 and he also received the 2nd highest honour of India, Padma Bhushan in 2009.

Under the chairmanship of Bindra, the ISSF’s Athletes Committee came up with a comprehensive Athletes Handbook, for the benefit of shooters around the globe.

The exceptional shooter created history by winning the 10 m air rifle gold at the Olympics games held in Beijing in 2008. He has also earned four gold medals for the nation in the Commonwealth Games.

Bindra also clinched 4 gold medals in the Commonwealth Games (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014) and one gold in the 2006 World Championships. He has also won the three Asian gold medals. A remarkable sportsman and a pride of India, Bindra very much deserved the prestigious Blue Cross Award.
