Early Life

Abdul Samad started playing cricket in the nearby locality at the age of eight. Like every accomplished player, his hobby of cricket became a real passion and he wanted to play professional cricket. His father, Mohammed Farooq was a national volleyball player. Being a sportsperson, he understood Samad’s interest and stood by him as a constant support. He always motivated him to do what he likes to do. Samad appeared for many selection trials but couldn’t get through any of those for the first few years. But he was determined to reach where he wanted and continued trying. His hard work paid off and he got into the U-14 team where he played for three years before moving into the U-16 category. Eventually, he played for the U-19 Jammu and Kashmir team.

Hardships

In the 2017/2018 junior cricket season, Samad was dropped from the Under-19 squad because of a few poor ODI performances. Daunted by this incident, he doubled his training to get back into the team. Whenever he bats for the junior team, he could do anything more than some quick cameos. His performances were considered normal despite having a good strike rate. Samad’s bowling skills were untested until he took a 5-wicket haul in an Under-19 ODI match against Odisha. He gave his trials for the senior team selection and was called up for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

On his debut match against Nagaland, he scored an unbeaten 76. That match changed his career. With decent performances in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the next Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Samad established himself as a power-striker who can easily find maximums at the lower order. In first-class cricket, he has played 10 matches so far and scored two centuries and three half-centuries. His average is 39.46 and strike rate 112.97 which are staggering numbers for a 19-year-old.

Samad gave shots at the trials of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Mumbai Indians. It was during a Ranji trophy match when he got picked by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2019 IPL auction. It was a dream come true for the young lad and became only the third player from Jammu and Kashmir to start in an IPL match. For a team like Sunrisers Hyderabad where some of the best international players bat at the top four and a middle-order which needs solutions, Abdul Samad fit like the right piece of the puzzle. He scores that few extra boundaries which will make a difference to 15 to 20 runs. Who knows whether that might be the difference between winning and losing? In T20 cricket, players like Samad are always handy.

Rise of Abdul Samad

In the 2nd qualifier of IPL 2020, Abdul Samad scored a blitzkrieg of 33 from 16 balls against Delhi Capitals. Though it wasn’t enough to win it for SRH, that knock showed the world what a clean hitter Abdul Samad is. He was also used as an occasional spinner by David Warner. His bowling, as far as we’ve seen, isn’t anything special but the one memorable moment with the ball that happened in the match against CSK in the same 2020 season. When Bhuvneshwar Kumar got injured bowling the penultimate over of the match, CSK needed 44 runs from 11 balls with none other than MS Dhoni and Sam Curran on the crease. Khaleel Ahmed who was set to bowl the last over had to bowl the crucial remaining five balls of the over. He bowled decently to leave CSK 28 runs behind victory in the last over. The only bowlers David Warner had in his team was Abdul Samad and Abhishek Sharma.

The captain trusted Samad to bowl the last over. His first ball to MS Dhoni was a long wide which went all the way to the boundary. At that moment, it felt like MS Dhoni was going to finish it again as the pressure started to build on the bowler. But Samad made the comeback in style, bowling a couple of deliveries right on the blockhole which ensured the win for SRH. This was the only notable bowling performance of Abdul Samad in his IPL career so far.

From 16 matches played in the IPL, the youngster scored 147 runs with an explosive strike rate of 161.54. He has become one of the reliable low order batsmen in the SRH squad but he has to go a long way to play for his nation. Samad has gone through tough situations before and improved himself to reach his goals. We hope to see him in the Indian shirt one day.
